Ellern Mede School launches new special needs consultancy

Ellern Mede School has launched a new Special Educational Needs (SEN) consultancy. As an independent school, students may enrol on a private basis.

New facility is planned

Ellern Mede School is linked to Ellern Mede specialist children’s centres in Mill Hill and Barnet but plans to open a new facility specifically for its SEN work in the new year. Right now though, its  SEN consultancy is available to parents, local authorities and mainstream or special schools.

The SEN service includes support packages for a child’s complex needs, needs assessment for Educational Health Care Plan (EHCP) as well as annual reviews for EHCPs. The school can liaise with local authorities and assist with funding applications for children with special educational needs.

What really differentiates Ellern Mede School’s SEN offer is its significant expertise in the key disciplines across mental health support alongside education. Ellern Mede School students and their families have access to clinicians from within Ellern Mede specialist children’s hospitals which include family therapists, psychologists, social workers, activity coordinators, occupational therapists as well as specialist doctors and psychiatrists.

Specific and tailor-made therapy and support packages are available as an option to support individual needs. Some children have both SEN and mental health difficulties and can overcome barriers to learning through the school’s specialist approach.

Mr Adel Shirbini, head master, said: “Our SEN Consultancy supports children and young people with SEN and mental health problems to access high quality learning in mainstream and independent schools.

“We understand that children and young people suffering from any form of special educational need may experience challenges in mainstream learning environments. This can include difficulty concentrating, difficulty in group-oriented education sessions, lethargy due to illness, and difficulties in joining groups.”

“Our SEN consultants work with the family, the young person and their usual place of education, to assess ways to make learning more effective.

“Our team have significant expertise in pulling together the key disciplines providing the holistic support required by these young people.

“We provide a full assessment, drawing reports together from all parties, to ensure the SEN application and plans for treatment and post treatment support are holistic. This is especially important if the mental health issues are entrenched and enduring. We work with Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), social workers in the community and the mainstream schools. We make sure that local authorities can plan to appropriately resource the support they need.”
